Microbiology 509 FAQs

What is a 500-level science course?

According to the university, 500-level courses are "intermediate courses providing undergraduate or professional credit that may be counted on a major or field of specialization, and may provide graduate credit only in other departments." This means that 500-level courses at OSU. are junior/graduate level courses.

Junior/graduate level science courses can be considerably more difficult than freshman and sophomore level science courses. Microbiology 509 is no exception. In particular, Microbiology 509 is not an easy course and will require considerably more dedication than courses you are used to if you have previously taken only freshman and sophomore science courses. This includes Zoology 232 and 235 (introductions to physiology and anatomy, respectively).

Is microbiology 509 hard?

Microbiology 509 involves a large amount of memorization. This is because there are both a great deal of terms that define medical microbiology, and because microbiology is built upon a number of disciplines that also have an enormous amount of terminology (and also, of course, concepts). So, for better or for worse, prepare yourself for a great deal of memorization. This memorization may take a great deal of effort and require considerable dedication. If you are not prepared to devote a large amount of effort to memorizing, understanding, and developing an ability to apply large amounts of terminology, consider not taking microbiology 509. You will only be frustrated.
