Bio 113, Bio 114, and Micro 509 Students, Please Read This: Links to PowerPoint lectures are presented below for your perusal. Note, however, that these are large files. Exam questions are predominantly drawn from PowerPoint presentations, though more so for Micro 509 and with greater book involvement for Bio 113 and Bio 114. Please don’t use the fact that exam questions come predominantly from PowerPoints as incentive to blow off reading your text. By reading your text you will gain an understanding of the material that may otherwise elude you were you to base your studies solely on PowerPoints.

 

For both biology and microbiology students, to do well on exams you will be expected not only to know the details of vocabulary but also to have a relatively strong understanding of concepts and relationships between concepts. Often, though, I find that what students describe as “difficult” exam questions are difficult mostly because students don’t know their vocabulary rather than because the question is conceptually difficult. Please, if you don’t understand the meaning of a word (or of a symbol), then I invite you to ask a question during the exam. I will gladly answer your question unless I feel that you should have known the answer from your studies.

 

Note that memorization of vocabulary will come much easier if you actually understand the material, and that understanding will come much easier if you decide to enjoy rather than fight the material. In addition to being reasonably enthusiastic, gaining an understanding of material will require that you read your text, attend lectures, study the material you are being explicitly held responsible for, and to do all of the above well prior to sitting down to study for an exam. Above all, don’t assume that you can get away with not knowing or not understanding significant chunks material.
