Please send information on any meetings you think might be of interest to the Bacteriophage Ecology Group, to be included in the following list.

January 2-6, 2002 &
January 4-8, 2003
Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology Meeting Anaheim, California (2002); Toronto, Ontario (2003)
SICB is formerly the American Society for Zoology. Yes, that has little to do with bacteriophagy but nevertheless one of these years (if it ever doesn't conflict with my teaching) I hope to create a tiny bacteriophage presence at one of their meetings. (contents | phage ecology group | top of page)

This meeting will be hosted by the virology community of theUniversity of Kentucky under the direction of our local host, Said Ghabrial.UK's campus is located in the midst of Kentucky's beautiful Blue Grass region.Lexington, a city with a population of nearly one-quarter million, is well-knownfor its picturesque thoroughbred horse farms and offers many entertainment andtoursim opportunities. The ASV 2002 scientific program includes symposia, satellite symposia and concurrent workshops and poster sessions on many aspectsof virology. The deadline for submission of abstracts is February 1, 2002. American Society for Virology home page. (contents | phage ecology group | top of page)
???, 2003 Microbial Population Biology Gordon Conference ???
This meeting saw (in 1995) the genesis of the bacteriophage ecology group and so far looks like it will still be given in the midst of New Hampshire's hilly splendor. The chair of the 2001 meeting is Lin Chao who, though not a member of BEG, is a bacteriophage ecologist. More information about Gordon Research Conferences can be obtained from their web site. Information on the cost of attending a meeting may be found by clicking here. Note, you will (or, at least, would) receive a $50 discount on the registration fee if your registration is post-marked at least three weeks prior to the meeting (take this discount upon registering). ???, 2003? International Phage Meeting Evergreen (Olympia, WA)??? Montreal???
Phage people with a variety of interests are encouraged to attend. The hope is to turn this meeting into one that fosters "communication among scientists working with phages at all levels." Discounts will be available for students. Both graduate students and interested undergraduates are welcome to both attend and present. Contact Betty Kutter for additional details. Molecular Genetics of Bacteria & Phages Cold Spring Harbor, NY
This meeting was once and perhaps still is the center of the bacteriophage universe, though emphasis, as might be expected, is not on bacteriophage ecology.

Abstracts Due: May 29, 2002

You are cordially invited to participate in the fifty-sixth meeting on Molecular Genetics of Bacteria & Phages which will be held at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. The meeting will begin on Tuesday, August 20, 2002, and will conclude with lunch on Sunday, August 25. The specific goal of this conference is to bring together a group of scientists studying diverse aspects of prokaryotic growth using the tools of molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, and structure analysis. The meeting is intended to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information and to discuss the latest research findings and technical advances.

We encourage the submission of abstracts covering diverse topics and under-repesented organisms and particularly encourage junior investigators to present their results at the meeting.

The format of the meeting will include morning and evening sessions, selected from the abstracts, principally on unpublished work. In addition, there will be three poster sessions, held in the afternoons. The organizers will decide the suitability of each abstract for oral or poster presentation, but please specify if you prefer a poster. (contents | phage ecology group | top of page)

International Union of Microbiology Societies/International Congress of Virology Paris
The IUMS is organizing the XIIth International Congress of Virology in Paris, July 27 to August 1, 2002. It coincides with the Xth International Congress of Bacteriology and Applied Microbiology and the Xth International Congress of Mycology.

The following 3 symposia of the Virology Congress are scheduled explicitly for bacteriophages:
  1. The phage genome (conveners H. Krisch, R. Hendrix).
  2. Phage lysis and lysogeny (J. Maniloff, T. Alatossava).
  3. Applied and environmental phage biology (H-W. Ackermann, E. Kutter).
The third symposium includes everything from phage therapy to industrial microbiology and the role of phage in the biosphere. There will be poster sessions as usual, which we hope will include many phage papers. The common plenary sessions on such topics as risks from food-born microorganisms and the evolution and coevolution of pathogens should be of interest to many phage biologists, as should sessions at the various meetings on such topics as structure and assembly of viruses, biofilms, rapid identification of food-born microorganisms, antibiotic resistance, and viral bioinformatics.

Deadlines for abstracts and registration are January 31 and April 30, 2002, respectively. The registration fee is 600 Euro (with a special student rate of only 300 Euro), and includes the Mycology and the Bacteriology and Applied Microbiology congresses as well as the Virology congress; it is due at the time of abstract submission. Information on the program, submission of abstracts, exhibitions, and accommodation can be obtained through the congress Web site or by searching "IUMS " on the Net. Accommodation forms are to be published by the Organizing Committee, but congress-arranged accommodations tend to be expensive and we recommend you make your own reservations by April.

We are seriously considering finding a reasonably-priced hotel to recommend for phage people who are interested, to make it easier for us to talk and spend informal time with each other and also to facilitate helping people find roommates. At the Evergreen International Phage Biology meeting last August, we also discussed that this meeting should be a preferred gathering place for phage people this summer, with the possibility raised of having a more informal 2-day phage meeting just afterwards in or near Paris; approaching the Pasteur to let us use a meeting space was one suggestion that seemed appropriate. Please let us know as soon as possible if you would be interested in such an informal post-meeting gathering and any ideas for it. Our planning would also be aided if you could tell us as soon as possible the approximate titles of abstracts you are planning to submit to the Virology Congress.

Scholarships will be granted to help young scientists from developing countries attend the congresses and submit their work. Deadline for application : 31st January 2002. First Allocation : 15th April 2002; Second Allocation : 1st June 2002. You need to submit your abstract together with your scholarship application form. The scholarships will be granted in the form of waiver of registration and/or accommodation support (depending on the decision of the scholarship committee).

Please contact us with further questions or suggestions about any phage-related aspect of this exciting upcoming conference.
