Course Objectives: To gain an understanding of the theatre as an art form, to gain a basic understanding of theatre history, the various theatre artists, the theatre arts in modern society, and to form a method of analyzing theatrical productions.
Course Content: The aesthetics of theatre, especially the artist-audience relationship. Some theatre history. The craft of the various theatre artists. Some reading and discussion of plays.
Method of Presentation: Lecture/Discussion, filmstrips, films, possible group presentations.
Method of Evaluation: 3 exams, written analysis of play text, 2 written critiques of play productions, oral & written report on an important playwright, quizzes, class participation.

Technical Production Practicum

Course Objectives: To gain practical experience in the various areas of technical theatre production (scenery, costumes, props, lights, sound, and makeup)
Course Content: Provides experience in technical production activities.
Method of Presentation: Practical work on an OSU theatre production.
Method of Evaluation: 40 hours of work are expected for each credit. Evaluation is calculated on participation, attitude, dependability, and growth in ability. Students are required to attend strike which is usually immediately after the final performance

Fundamentals of Script Analysis

Course Objectives: To discover how to do an indepth analysis of play text.
Course Content: Fundamental principles for intensive study of the playscript as the basis of production. Discussion of several plays through the course.
Method of Presentation: Class discussion and lecture. Some videotapes and oral presentations.
Method of Evaluation: A series of written assignments based on play analysis. Final oral/written project. Possible quizzes. Critiques of theatre productions seen outside of class.

Great Ages of the Theatre

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of the course, the student should be able to recognize the major theatrical conventions of the past periods, to comprehend the ways with which audiences of the past perceived the theatre, and to possess a grasp of the role theatre played in individual past historical societies.
Course Content: A survey of theatrical practices of the past three thousand years of Western European history through an examination of existing iconographic, textual, and archaeological materials. Also examination of some non-Western theatre.
Method of Presentation: Lecture and discussion plus audio/visual aids.
Method of Evaluation: Two midterms and a final exam. Critiques of two live theatre productions. Analytical papers of 2 plays assigned. 5 worksheets for additional plays assigned. Some quizzes. Participation.

Acting Fundamentals I

Course Objectives: To begin to understand the various techniques and theories of acting styles. To allow each person to begin discovering his/her personal resources -physical, mental, emotional. To help each person begin to establish a technique for developing a character.
Course Content: Basic information concerning acting styles. Information and activities concerning vocal and physical control, pantomime, concentration, character development, and character analysis.
Method of Presentation: Discussion. Numerous class activities and performances. Some videotapes or films.
Method of Evaluation: Script analysis. Various activity assignments. One monologue and two scenes. Critiques of live performances.

Production Run Crew Practicum

Course Objectives: To gain knowledge of live theatre through practical experience on one of the run crews of a theatre production (shift crew, fly rail, wardrobe, props, lights, sound, makeup)
Course Content: Hands-on involvement in the production of live theatre; participation leading to a more thorough understanding of theatre and in particular theatre design and technology.
Method of Presentation: Hands-on instruction and execution of backstage activities needed to technically support an OSU theatre production; some hours may also be needed on preparation of one of the technical areas (scenery, costumes, props, lights, sound, makeup).
Method of Evaluation: 80 hours of participation are expected, most of these hours occurring the 2-3 weeks of the run of a theatre production, beginning no later than the first technical rehearsal. Evaluation is calculated on participation, attitude, dependability, and growth in ability. Students are required to attend strike which is usually immediately after the final performance.
