Psychology 693 consists of individual reading or research projects developed by special agreement between instructor and student. Psychology 693 provides an opportunity for students to pursue knowledge in psychology in an independent fashion. The student taking 693 credits should be able to undertake the project with minimal supervision. Psychology 693 has been developed for those students wishing to gain research experience, explore a particular topic in depth, or pursue some other academic experience which can not be obtained in the classroom.
The student needs to have taken a minimum of 19 hours in psychology (Psych. 100, Psych 300 and an additional 9 credit hours). Permission of the instructor is a necessity. These courses are graded S/U. Only six hours of 693 credit may be applied toward the psychology hours required for the major.
The following guidelines have developed and endorsed by the psychology faculty at OSU-Mansfield:
1. There are a limited number of 693 opportunities available. Therefore, priority will be given to those students who are psychology majors and whose motivation goes beyond the simple need to earn additional psychology credits.
2. Only under the most unusual circumstances
will a student be allowed to take more than 2 credits of 693 in
a quarter.
3. The student and professor should discuss the form that the
693 project will take prior to the start of the quarter.
4. If the 693 credit will involve community service or an internship, a departmental form must be completed.
5. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the professor within the first two days of the quarter during which the 693 is undertaken.
6. The student should expect to spend 2 ½ to 3 hours per week for each credit hour earned.
7. Students are responsible for providing the supervising professor with a weekly brief written report of progress made that week on the project.
8. At the end of the quarter, the student is responsible for providing evidence of having completed the project. This may take the form of a paper, a book review, a series of research critiques, etc. If the planned project has not been completed, the professor has the option of giving a grade of Unsatisfactory or an Incomplete. A grade of Satisfactory will only be given if the project has been completed in a satisfactory manner.
I have read and understood the above guidelines and agree to abide by them.
Signed,
