Course Objectives: 1. To gain knowledge of the westward movement in American history. 2. To develop skills in critical analysis of scholarly literature. 3. To become familiar with how historians have interpreted the American past.
Course Content: This course examines the inexorable push of European American civilization across North America. Beginning with the settlement of the Ohio Valley and the Greater Mississippi Basin, it looks at the early explorations, the mining, farming and ranching frontiers, the coming of the railroads, and the impact of all this upon native, Hispanic and Franco Americans who had previously populated the region.

Method of Evaluation: Midterm examination: 30% Papers and presentation: 35% (7% each) Final examination: 35%
