Course Objectives: In this seminar, we will explore the political and social development and dynamics of the modern Middle East. The goal of the course will be to more fully understand the context of the current conflicts in the Middle East, the terrorist attacks against the U.S., as well as the nature of Middle Eastern society in the early twenty-first century.

Course Content: We will begin with a brief overview of the basic tenets and practices of Islam and a history of the interactions between Islam and the west. The remainder of the class will focus on the 19-21st century political, social and economic developments of the Middle East.

Method of Presentation: The readings for the course will be a mix of primary sources and scholarly works. In class time will be devoted primarily to a discussion of the readings. There will only be a few lectures.

Method of Evaluation: The course grade is based upon the following: class participation (30%), midterm (15%), paper (15%), oral presentation & written report (10% each), and final (20%).
