Course Objectives: This course aims to provide more intensive knowledge of American labor history, to enhance sophistication in historical interpretation, and to encourage thoughtful verbal expression of ideas, clear and compelling writing, and careful reading.

Course Content: From colonial times to the present, America has been built--literally--by working people. This course will examine the history of American workers from the early days of seamen and artisan craftsmen (weavers, blacksmiths, and cobblers) all the way down to the present-day Wal-Mart associate. Our topics of examination will include the gender division of labor that separated women's work from men's and created disparities in women's income, ethnic and racial diversity of the American working class, strikes and other forms of labor conflict, organized labor political parties, and the union movement's rise and decline.

Method of Presentation: Lectures, readings, discussion.

Method of Evaluation: Student performance will be measured by attendance, participation in discussion, and some combination of papers and exams, to be explained on first day of class.
