Course Objectives: This course has the following aims: to provide more intensive knowledge of the Vietnam War; to enhance sophistication in historical interpretation, especially military and political history; and to encourage thoughtful verbal expression of ideas, clear and compelling writing, and careful reading.
Course Content: The Vietnam War--known to the Vietnamese as the "American War"--has been called "America's longest war." Although peak deployments came in 1968, the war can be said to have lasted from the Second World War (when American intelligence first became involved in Indochina) until at least 1973, when the last American ground troops were withdrawn from Vietnam, or perhaps 1975, when the government of South Vietnam collapsed. There have been few more controversial wars in American history. This course will provide an in-depth examination of the experience and history of the Vietnamese people prior to American involvement, of the nature of the respective governments in the North and South of Vietnam, of the experience of American G.I.s and other combat personnel in Vietnam, and of the general political and diplomatic questions of the war.
Method of Presentation: For the most part, this course will be a reading-intensive seminar discussion. There may be some mini-lectures and some films, if deemed logical to enhance the learning experience.
Method of Evaluation: Students will write four papers on the assigned texts (with room for choice of reading and topics). Student performance will also be measured by attendance and participation in discussion. There will be one quiz.
