Course Objectives: This advanced-level American history seminar has the aim to provide basic knowledge of the contours of American history between 1877 and 1920,to elevate comprehension and appreciation of historical interpretation, and to encourage thoughtful verbal expression of ideas, clear and compelling writing, and careful reading.
Course Content: The Gilded Age (approximately 1877-1898) and the Progressive Era (approximately 1898-1917) were significant periods in American history, marking the rise of the United States to world economic and military primacy, the reconstruction of American capitalism as the corporate form of business organization came to the fore, the consolidation of Jim Crow segregation, the emergence of substantial movements for social and political reform, and the peak of European immigration. All of these issues -- and others, such as gender as a factor in the history of this period -- will be taken up in our readings and discussions.
Method of Presentation: This course is a seminar, with no lectures. Reading, dialogue, debate, and discussion are the rub. We will aspire to judicious analysis of the assigned readings by charting their major and minor arguments, identifying and assessing their evidence, and evaluating their merit.
Method of Evaluation: Student performance will be measured by attendance, participation in discussion, and completion of four papers on the assigned texts on guided topics of the student's choice.
