Course Objectives: This course will provide the basic narrative of the history of the United States and its people before 1877 in a manner that will be useful for students in their future lives as American citizens. It also aspires to encourage students' ability to detect and make historical arguments, and to lay a basis for more advanced university study by fostering creative, independent thought, careful and clear writing, and informed, engaged discussion.

Course Content: Topics covered will include Native American civilization, European conquest and colonization, life in British North America, the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, slavery and the Old South, the commercial and industrial expansion of early American Republic, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Close attention will be paid to the social history of women, African Americans, Native Americans, and working people, as well as to the leaders of the emergent nation's political institutions.

Method of Presentation: Lectures, discussion, possibly films.

Method of Evaluation: Student performance will be measured by two brief papers, a final exam, attendance, and participation in discussion.
