Course Objectives: This course will examine the history of Europe in the nineteenth century. We will examine the French Revolution and Napoleon's rule as background to the period. We will also discuss the Industrial Revolution, political developments, and social and cultural changes. The course is weighted somewhat toward western European developments, but we will also study eastern Europe and Russia.

Method of Presentation: Primarily discussion. Students will be expected to participate actively in each class.

Method of Evaluation: Participation, two examinations and one short (12 pages) research paper involving secondary materials.
