Course Objectives: Development of skills in historical analysis and writing, as well as a knowledge of the evolution of Christian practice and theology.
Course Content: This course will trace the development of Christianity from the Apostolic period to the late ninth century, focusing on its transformation from a small Jewish sect to the official religion of the Roman Empire and its successor states in western Europe. We will be examining the development of doctrine, forms of worship, organization, and issues of gender in the early Church. The assigned readings will all be from the writings of early Christian authors.
Method of Presentation: Lecture and discussion (approximately 50-50 split).
