Course Objectives:
Course Content: This course explores the transformation of the practice of Christianity in Europe from the late fifteenth through early seventeenth centuries. The desire to reform the practice of the faith and of the institution of the Church had deep roots in the late medieval period. Building upon these desires, Martin Luther's protest against the practice of indulgences led to the fragmentation of the Church into many sects and ignited a century and a half of religious and political conflict and warfare. Through the course we'll explore the theological developments, the relationship between Church and State, the role of the laity, gender, and spirituality.
