Course Objectives: This course seeks to provide a basic introductory survey imparting knowledge of American history -- particularly political, social, and economic history -- since 1877. Along the way, it will also introduce students to methods of historical interpretation that may permit more advanced work in history and related disciplines in the social sciences and liberal arts. Finally, it will encourage thoughtful verbal expression of ideas, clear and compelling writing, and careful reading.
Course Content: This is an introductory-level course in American history meant to provide students with a baseline narrative of the nation's course from 1877 to the present. Subjects covered will include the end of Reconstruction, the rise of industrialism, Western expansion, Populism and Progressivism, the rise of Jim Crow segregation, immigration, the First World War, the winning of the right to vote by women, the 1920s, the Great Depression and the New Deal, the Second World War, the Cold War and McCarthyism, the 1960s, the rise of conservative Republican politics, and the post-9/11 world. Attention will be paid to the history of workers, women, African Americans, and other social groups as well the nation's political leadership.
Method of Presentation: Lectures, discussions, and, potentially, films.
Method of Evaluation: Student performance will be weighed based upon two brief papers, final exam, attendance, and participation.
