Course Objectives: This course will examine the history of Russia and the other Soviet republics from the immediate pre-revolutionary period through the demise of the Soviet Union in 1991. Students will read both secondary and primary material, as well as viewing several films. We will also discuss the post-Soviet period.

Method of Presentation: Primarily discussion. Students will be expected to participate actively in each class.

Method of Evaluation: Two examinations and one short research paper (approx. 12 pages)involving secondary materials.
