Course Objectives: Development of skills in historical analysis and writing, as well as a knowledge of the evolution of Christian practice and theology.
Course Content: This course examines the development of the western Christian Church from the ninth through fifteenth centuries. Among the topics we'll analyze are the rise of the papal monarchy, monastic reform movements, popular piety, scholasticism, mysticis, the Avignon papacy, and the conciliar movement. Throughout the course we'll explore the relationship between Church and state, the role of the laity, gender and spirituality, and theology.
Method of Presentation: Lecture-discussion, including 3-mail; some; writing and revision workshops; computer and Internet writing and research
Method of Evaluation: 2-3 papers, midterm and exam; participation is graded
