Course Objectives: To acquaint students with serious problems of historical analysis, to improve their writing, and to enhance their capacity to recognize major schools of historical interpretation.
Course Content: This course seeks to challenge students to think about history as a practice and a discipline. The questions we will ask will be varied: Is objectivity possible in historical inquiry? What are appropriate subjects and sources of evidence for historians? Is history strictly about what happened, or should historians also evaluate the conduct of past actors and practices? By what standards should we judge the merit of a historian's work? Is there a difference between history and memory? What, precisely, is history?
Method of Presentation: Intensive seminar-style discussion of readings.
Method of Evaluation: Student performance evaluated based on four papers of moderate length, attendance, and participation in discussion.
